crime: terrorism - 911 incident

this terrorist attack has a huge impact on America. more than 3500 people died. the real estates losses are also staggering. 13.45 million square feet of office space were destroyed.this lose represents30% of the total class of real estate of the downtown area and 3.6% of office space on the island of manhattan. also, the terrorist attack had caused an econmic downturn of america. since america is a developed country and many countries depending on america for trade, in one way or another, many countries including singapore were affected. the economic downturn then caused many to lose their jobs and their standard of living worsen. Theeconomic consequences can be largelybroken down into short-term direct effects;medium-term confidence effects and longertermproductivity effects.The direct economic costs of terrorism,including the destruction of life and property,responses to the emergency, restoration ofthe systems and the infrastructure affected,and the provision of temporary livingassistance, are most pronounced in theimmediate aftermath of the attacks and thusmatter more in the short run. Direct economiccosts are likely to be proportionate to theintensity of the attacks and the size and the characteristics of the economy affected. Thisallowed the financial markets to perform one of their key functions: that of digesting theinformation on the economic and financial impact of the terrorist attacks after an initial shockand efficiently incorporating the information into asset prices so that it could be integratedinto decisions about the future.Financial instruments involve commitments over time and therefore price and provide ahedge against uncertainty. While the initial effect of any major crisis may involve a financialmarket overreaction because of higher levels of uncertainty as the new information is beingassessed and absorbed, once the long-term impact of the crisis is assessed, markets return totheir pre crisis condition. 1. The technique used was illustrations. From his illustrations, the readers can infer that the prisoners led a sorrow life in uncertainty, not knowing when and how they will die. His description of capital punishment made us sympathized with the prisoner and attempted to persuade readers to agree to his condemnation of capital punishment. He hoped that through his illustrations, the readers are able to imagine the situation of the prisoner and take pity on him so that capital punishment can be abolished.

2. The issue on capital punishment had been a controversial one. There were many arguments for and against it. Many said that the prisoners had to pay for their sins, for they would not be sentenced to death for no concrete reason. Also, the punishment must be severe enough so that it constantly reminds people not to break the law and to prevent the same people breaking the law again. However, many others, like the author, argued that capital punishment is cruel and torturing. There is no right or wrong stand to this issue and people have not reach a conclusion to this matter. Thus, this issue remains controversial till this day.

3. I personally think that capital punishment should exist. Having capital punishment can deter people from thinking of committing serious crimes. Also, those criminals should get their appropriate punishment for the crimes and sins that they had committed. I think that the death penalty can be justified by crimes like murder, smuggling of drugs in large amount or any other crimes that harm someone on purpose.
